Keeping Sobriety

Drug addiction and alcoholism are disorders of the body and mind that can seriously influence the existence of the folks that have these addictions, together with the lives of the people around them. Not only are these disorders life altering, they are also life threatening. Thousands of people through the world struggle with these disorders. But, for so many addicts and alcoholics as there are, there are also many individuals around the world who managed to end these addictions. Many individuals have obtained the required measures to fight addiction, learned to cope with the continual nature of these diseases, and have entered into a life of sobriety.

Maintaining sobriety is something that may be very demanding. Loads of people seem to think that in case you get an addiction problem all you need to do is move through treatment and become sober, and then you live a life of sobriety and are cured. This is not how it works. Folks could be able to prevent their addiction and maintain a life of sobriety, as addictions are long-term, incurable diseases. Through treatment one may hit sobriety, but keeping sobriety is an on-going procedure.

We must learn to stay a brand new lifestyle, when we enter into sobriety. We should reorganize and make healthy choices for ourselves that are supporting of sobriety. Also, we must learn how to cope with the life and stresses problems that come our way with better options. Sometimes, those people who have fought with habit find themselves feeling the urge to drink again when certain life problems originate. Sometimes when recovering addicts are faced with specific stimuli (people, situations, locations) that they correlate with addiction, they might experience old feelings and needs that threaten their sobriety.

Furthermore, a lot of people in sobriety get complacent after a little while. They’ve been living in sobriety for some time and feel they dont have to actively work to keep sobriety anymore. And when this occurs, individuals sometimes expose themselves to things they believe they could manage but may ultimately spark a relapse.

Maintaining sobriety means making changes in lifestyle and learning new tools for living, as well as always educating and reminding yourself about living in sobriety along with the practices which can be used to support sobriety. Some basic techniques for maintaining sobriety contain:

* Dwelling a healthier and active lifestyle that supports overall physical, emotional, and spiritual health

* Continuing to read literature regarding sobriety and recovery

* Being part of a recovery program including a 12-step program

* Avoiding negative people and folks that help dependency and exploitation

* Encompassing oneself with encouraging and good people

* Avoiding situations and assorted stimuli that will offer opportunity for relapse
